Dennis M. Kirkwood, FHFI is President of Kirkwood & Associates, LLC, a facility management consulting firm located in the university community of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Formed in 1990, Kirkwood & Associates serves a nationwide clientele in health care and higher education.
Mr. Kirkwood's professional practice encompasses the following areas:
- Facility strategy and asset management program development;
- Specialized facility development project services - programming, equipment planning, and relocation planning; management; and
- Consulting on facility management
program, policy: organization;
information systems; and
performance measures; standards.

Kirkwood & Associates counts among its clients Partners Healthcare System's Real Estate & Facilities Division, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's Facilities Engineering Division, Kaiser-Permanente's National Facilities Services organization, Henry Ford Health System's Corporate Facilities Department, University of Michigan Health System, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Corporation, and Resurrection Healthcare Corporation.
Prior to forming Kirkwood & Associates Mr. Kirkwood was Assistant Hospital Director at University of Michigan Hospitals, where he was responsible for the Plant Operations Division, with authorized staffing of 600 FTE and a $27.6 million operating budget [FY 1989].
Mr. Kirkwood's initial assignment at University of Michigan was as Activation Administrator, wherein he led a two year effort to plan the staffing and operations of the $350 MM [1986] Replacement Hospital Project and managed the start-up, occupancy, and transfer of patients to the new facilities once construction was completed. The UMH plan is widely regarded as a model process for hospital activation.
Before coming to Michigan Mr. Kirkwood served as Owner's Representative (project manager) over the life span of the $30 million [1982] project to replace the 250-bed Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.
Mr. Kirkwood holds a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Detroit and is a Fellow of the Health Facilities Institute. He is an active member of ASHE, the American Society for Hospital Engineering; and IFMA, the International Facility Management Association.
